Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀮𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀤𑀺 (lukkadi), which is derived from Sanskrit लुप् (lup, to hide) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-). Cognate with Nepali लुक्नु (luknu), Assamese লুকা (luka), Bengali লুকোনো (lukōnō), Sylheti ꠟꠥꠇꠣꠘꠤ (lukani).
