From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hráwdʰitas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (red). Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬙𐬀 (raoiδita), English red. Doublet of रोहित (rohita). Also related to रुधिर (rudhira, red).

      édhante asyā jñātáyaḥ pátirbandhéṣu badhyate.
      She [the bride] is blue and red in hue; the female imp who clings close is driven away.
      The kinsmen of this bride thrive well and her husband is securely bound by the bond [of marriage].
