Borrowed from Classical Persian شام (šām), from Proto-Iranian *xšáfnyah. Cognate with Sanskrit क्षप् (kṣap, night); despite phonetic and semantic similarity, not related to Sanskrit श्यामा (śyāmā, night, shadow), which derives from a different root.
