Inherited from Old Bengali ধুঁআ (dhũẇā), from Prakrit 𑀥𑀼𑀁𑀅𑀓 (dhuṃaka), from 𑀥𑀼𑀁𑀅 (dhuṃa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit ধূম (dhūma), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuHmás, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós (smoke), from the root *dʰewh₂-. Doublet of ধূম (dhum, smoke), ধূসর (dhūsor, gray, grey), and ধুলো (dhulō, dust). . Cognate with Assamese ধোঁৱা (dhü̃a), Hindi धुआँ (dhuā̃), Sylheti ꠗꠥꠝꠣ (dúma).
