Inherited from Sanskrit मिष्ट (miṣṭa), from earlier मृष्ट (mṛṣṭa, polished). Doublet of মাখা (makha), মাখন (makhon), মাজা (maja), মিটা (miṭa), and মিঠা (miṭha) (see there for more).
