Learned borrowing from Sanskrit স্থান (sthāna). Doublet of থানা (thana, “police station”), থাকা (thaka, “to live, stay”), স্থল (sthol, “ground, land”), থালা (thala, “plate”), স্থাপন (sthapon, “placing”), স্থাপত্য (sthapotto, “architecture”), ঠিক (ṭhik, “right, correct”), ঠিকানা (ṭhikana, “address”), ঠাঁই (ṭhãi, “place”), স্থিত (sthito, “fixed, located”), and -স্তান (-stan).
