From Sanskrit जम्बु (jambu) or जम्बू (jambū, “jambul”). Compare Old Khmer ជម្វូ (jamvū, “rose apple”); Modern Khmer ជម្ពូ (cumpuu, “rose apple”). Doublet of ชมพู (chom-puu) (both etyma).
