editFrom Sanskrit आत्मा (ātmā, “self”). Cognate with Thai อาตมะ; Old Khmer ʼātmā (“self; soul”), Modern Khmer អាត្មា (ʼaatmaa). Compare Pali attā, from which Thai อัตตา (àt-dtaa) is derived.
