From Proto-Tai *r.tɯəᴮ (sweat). The expected form is เหื่อ /hɯa̯˨˩/, which undergone spontaneous nasalization to become เหงื่อ /ŋɯa̯˨˩/. Cognate with Lao ເຫື່ອ (hư̄a), Northern Thai ᩉᩮᩬᩥ᩵ᩋ, Shan ႁိူဝ်ႇ (hòe), ᦵᦠᦲᧈ (ḣoe¹), Tai Nüa ᥞᥫᥱ (hǒe), Ahom 𑜍𑜢𑜤𑜈𑜫 (rüw), Nong Zhuang towq or tuiq. Compare Khmer ញើស (ñəəh).
