From Proto-Tai *qweːnᴬ (to hang up). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡ᩠ᩅᩯᩁ, Lao ແຂວນ (khǣun), ᦶᦧᧃ (ẋwaen), Shan ၵႅၼ် (kěn) or ၽႅၼ် (phěn), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜐𑜫 (khiñ).
