Etymology 1

edit
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given an etymology by STEDT (khân "room; division, class"), and doesn't seem to be mentioned by Luce 1981. Despite superficial similarities to the Middle pronunciation of Chinese (jiān, “among; room”), the Chinese term is not related and comes from a different Sino-Tibetan root. A relation to Etymology 2 seems very unlikely.”
