Inherited from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *k-lwat (to set free), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g/s-lwat (to free, release, slip, dislocate). Cognates include Tibetan ལྷུང་ (lhung, to loosen, relax), Old Chinese (OC *l̥ʰoːd, *l'oːd, “to peel off, take off clothes, escape”); see the Chinese for more discussion (STEDT).
