Onomatopoeic. Inherited from Middle Georgian შრიალი (šriali). Unattested in Old Georgian, but ultimately inherited from Proto-Georgian-Zan *šr-ial-. By surface analysis, *შრ- (*šr-) +‎ -იალ (-ial) +‎ -ი (-i).
