Could be from Proto-Indo-European *ser- (flow, stream), and thus cognate to Sanskrit सर्म (sárma, going, running, flowing), from root सरति (sarati, to flow, run, speed), and Albanian gjurmë. Could also be from ὄρνυμι (órnumi, I urge on, incite).
