ὄστριμον

Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

Improbable hypothesis by Bezzenberger, who reconstructs *h₂odʰ-tro-, comparing Proto-Germanic *edaraz (enclosure, shelter) and Proto-Slavic *òdrъ (bed): both the Greek suffixation and the formation in *-tro- remain unexplained. According to Frisk, this word belongs to ὄστρακον (óstrakon, earthen vessel) and ὄστρεον (óstreon, oyster), assuming a prior meaning "protecting roof", for which he gives a parallel in Latin testudō (tortoise; protecting roof). Since there is no Indo-European etymology, the word may be Pre-Greek, although there appears no further indication for this.
