Etymology
editLiterally “bear cat”, originally referring to red pandas. Displaced 貘 (mò) since Qing and Republican eras due to a misinterpretation of a chimera of the same name attributed to Bai Juyi and further transmitted by Su Song to the Compendium of Materia Medica (1596) made known to Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat in 1824.[1]
