Schuessler (2007) suggests that it is possibly Sino-Tibetan, relating it to Kamarupan ke, kʰe (one), which are perhaps related to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-kjaŋ (single), whence Tibetan རྐྱང (rkyang, single), Burmese [script needed] (khyàŋ, single).
