(rare) to do arithmetic; to calculate
ただ計算方法(けいさんほうほう)を教(おし)えるのではなく、算数(さんすう)する心(こころ)を育(はぐく)むことが大切(たいせつ)だ。
Tada keisan hōhō o oshieru no de wa naku, sansū suru kokoro o hagukumu koto ga taisetsu da.
It is important to foster an arithmetic way of thinking, rather than merely to teach how to calculate.

This irregular, -suru verb form with 算数 is quite rare, and nearly used as a coined word. 計算(けいさん)する (keisan suru) is far more commonly used.
