Etymology

edit

First attested in the Worin cheon'gangjigok (月印千江之曲 / 월인천강지곡), 1449, as Middle Korean 븥다 (Yale: puthta).

The meaning of "pass an examination" is thought to come from the civil service examinations of dynastic Korea, when the list of students who passed was attached to a wall.
