First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 울〯워러〮보다〮 (Yale: wǔlGwèlé-pwòtá).

Equivalent to 우러르 (ureoreu-, to look up)+ (-eo, infinitive suffix) + 보다 (boda, to see).
