  • South Gyeongsang (Busan) pitch accent: 의 / 운에 / 운애

Syllables in red take high pitch. This word always takes high pitch only on the second syllable, except before consonant-initial multisyllabic suffixes, when it takes full low pitch.

Noun edit

운애 (unae) (hanja 雲靉)

  1. (literary or Gyeongsang, Jeolla dialect) mist, fog
    Synonym: (Standard Korean) 안개 (an'gae)

Usage notes edit

  • The dialectal word is spelled 우네 (une) in Standard Korean Language Dictionary, but the relevant regions generally merge (ae) into (e), so it seems more likely that it is the same as the literary word, only spelled more phonetically.
  • The Dictionary of Southern Gyeongsang Varieties claims that the etymology of the dialectal word is from (雲 崖, cloud-veiled cliff), but this seems semantically far-fetched and is not further explained.
