  1. adjective-forming suffix, added to materials, indicating being composed of or related to that material; normally forms relational adjectives
    вода́ (vodá, water) + ‎-яно́й (-janój) → ‎водяно́й (vodjanój, (relational) water)
    соль (solʹ, salt) + ‎-яно́й (-janój) → ‎соляно́й (soljanój, (relational) salt)
    смола́ (smolá, tar) + ‎-яно́й (-janój) → ‎смоляно́й (smoljanój, (relational) tar; tarry, tarred)
    земля́ (zemljá, earth) + ‎-яно́й (-janój) → ‎земляно́й (zemljanój, (relational) earth)

Note the following properties:

  • The suffix is added onto the stem in its reduced form.
  • The suffix becomes -ано́й (-anój) after a hushing consonant (ш ж ч щ) or ц.
