Etymology 1

From late Middle High German biute, borrowed from Middle Low German büte, whence also the forms in other languages like Dutch buit, English booty, French butin. Of uncertain ultimate origin; possibly a Celtic borrowing, from Proto-Celtic *boudi (victory, booty, spoils). If so, related to the name of Boudica, a British Celtic queen.
