From Old Norse konungr (king's) + Old English tūn (town, manor), after the model of other settlements known as Cinges tūn or Cynges tūn (king's town). Doublet of Coniston Cold. Cf. also Conington, Conisbrough, Coningsby, Kingston, Kingstown, Kingstone, Kingsburg, and Kingsville.
