From earlier *swurgō, from Proto-Indo-European *swergʰ- (to watch over, worry; be ill, suffer). Cognate with Lithuanian sir̃gti (to be ill, be sick), Polish srogi (stern, severe, harsh), Old Irish serg (sickness, disease).
