From Early Proto-Slavic *ā́˙balni,[1] inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *āˀbōlnis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ebōl-n-is, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ébōl (apple). Cognates include Lithuanian obelìs, Old Prussian wobalne, Proto-Celtic *abalnā.
