Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *pelh₂- (to propel, to drive), via obsolescent *pelti +‎ *-jati. The later is attested in obsolete Slovene plẹ́ti (1p. sg. pres. pelem).

The Bulgarian descendant has merged with the reflex of unrelated Proto-Slavic *pylěti, *pyľati (to dissipate).
