From Middle High German rōr, from Old High German rōr, from Proto-Germanic *rauzą, of obscure origin; compare English rush and Old Norse reyrr, also possibly related to Latin ruscum (“bark”).
Cognate with Hunsrik Roher, Danish rør, Swedish rör.
