Originally in the obsolete form of Schrittschuh (“step shoe, pace shoe”), from Schritt + Schuh, an old compound already attested in Old High German scritescuoh. Remodelled in modern German by association with Schlitten (“sleigh”).
- The normal plural is Schlittschuhe. The unchanged plural Schlittschuh is common in the vernacular.
