From Middle High German snegel (“slug, snail”), from Old High German snegil, from Proto-Germanic *snagilaz. Cognate with Low German Snagel, English snail. The word failed to establish itself in Modern Standard German, but was later adopted in a more specialized sense in zoological terminology.
