Etymology edit
From Middle High German sperlinc, from Old High German sperili(n)g, derived from sparo.
Within High German, Sperling was north-eastern versus southern and western Spatz (western also Müsche, cf. Dutch mus, which was not standardised and has now been replaced with Spatz). Sperling was reinforced by Middle Low German sperlinc.
