Talk:八角
Additional Mandarin definition?
editCan this also mean "octagon" in Mandarin? Or is that 八角形物? 24.93.170.200 05:11, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Persian
edit@KevinUp: The Persian بادیانه (bādiyāna, “star anise”) looks adapted from the Chinese 八角 (MC peat kaewk, “star anise”) (is there a control of the Middle Chinese fetching or should the compounds contain Middle Chinese readings too?); Gernot Katzer suspects so too. And it’s a spice native to the Far-East. Also I now see that رازیانه (rāziyāna, “fennel”) seems to contain Chinese 香 (MC xjang, “fragrance”), but that’s another word. And possibly other terms with ـیانه (-yāna) I have overlooked so far. I am too clueless about CJK to see with a web search whether 八香 is something but we have already 八角香 and 八角茴香 (bājiǎo huíxiāng) in this dictionary meaning star anise both containing 香 (MC xjang, “fragrance”) and there are probably more dialectal Chinese terms, and you can solve the two Persian terms. - @Fay Freak:. Regarding Persian بادیانه (bādiyâne, “star anise”), the first two syllables (باد) matches well with Middle Chinese 八 (MC peat, “eight”). However, I'm not sure where the last two syllables (یانه) are derived from. Is it some sort of suffix in Persian? Other terms with similar formations I managed to find are:
- I did a search for 八香 at Wikisource Chinese [1] but can't find any senses related to "fennel" or "star anise". 八香 is mostly a sum of parts referring to "eight fragrances". KevinUp (talk) 03:58, 6 January 2020 (UTC) KevinUp (talk) 03:58, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
