Talk:een vlucht nemen

@Rua, Morgengave, Lambiam, Thadh, Mnemosientje, Appolodorus1, DrJos, MuDavid I was thinking of RFDing this as it seems a little SOP, but on the other hand it has a figurative use (a bit like "to be(come) popular") that does not seem very clear from its parts... or from the current definition for that matter. I think that was perhaps the sense (sense 4 of the English entry) intended by the entry creator; I support giving it {{&lit}} and perhaps expanding the definition with {{gloss|to become successful or popular}}. Thadh (talk) 15:36, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Isn't the (original) expression "een hoge vlucht nemen"? Is "een vlucht nemen" a shortening of it? If so, it may be called as such and let us also refer to that lemma (that lemma is not yet created). Morgengave (talk) 15:54, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

I think we should only define the figurative sense, which corresponds to sense 4 of take off, and reserve {{&lit}} for cases where there is a risk of confusion. The expression van de grond komen may be a synonym. Also, I have the impression that this idiom has a predominantly inchoative sense (to become successful), whereas een hoge vlucht nemen appears to mean something more steady (to attain a high level of popularity for a sustained period).  --Lambiam 21:28, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
