@Geographyinitiative: I had a vague sense that Americans can turn any "a /h/" into "an '" (err, you know what I mean). Certainly "an erb" (herb) rubs me the wrong way. Maybe I've been wrong all these years, quite possible. Equinox 20:32, 21 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Usage note: the hospital

When a school, prison, jail, court, and church are being referred to as an institution (vs. a particular building), you do not need to use the:

When do the children finish school?
I’ll meet you outside the court.

In BrE, hospital works the same way, but in AmE the article is required:

I had to go to the hospital.
She spent two weeks in the hospital.
