Not an adjective? edit

As discussed many times now, the entries here under "adjective" are not adjectives. You cannot say "This ad is very newspaper". — 141.168.28.158 11:45, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

But there are varieties of adjective. This is a modifier - a noun that has some of the qualities of an adjective. Modifiers can be used before the noun only, hence "This ad is very newspaper" does not apply. — Paul G 11:54, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
This is not a variety of an adjective. It is a variety of a noun. Adjectives are classes of words which have certain properties - "newspaper" has none of those properties. Nouns are another class of words which have certain properties - one of which is that they may modify other nouns. P.S. It is conceivable that "newspaper" could be an adjective in the same sense in which "paper" can describe a material - but none of the content on this article currently given is an adjective. — Hippietrail 12:59, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Pronunciation edit

I've always said "nyoos paper", not "nyooz paper", even though news is "nyooz". Is that just me? Equinox 08:41, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don’t think I have ever heard "nyoos paper" before, but it is a little hard to distinguish between "zpaper" and "spaper". I only say "nyooz paper". —Stephen (Talk) 23:21, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

30-day prison sentence? edit

Various slang dictionaries suggest that this word also refers to a 30-day prison sentence (because it would supposedly take a subliterate inmate that long to read the entire paper). Equinox 00:40, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Dictionary entry for French: Latin and Adlam scripts edit

Newspaper in French is "journal" which is correct. However there is a further entry for French in Latin and Adlam scripts which is not French. I think the words may be the Fulani words for "newspaper" as Fulani is written in both Latin and Adlam scripts. I will not correct the entry because I do not understand Fulani and I may be wrong. Please someone who understands the language correct it. Gilbert Read (talk) 11:10, 20 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Gilbert Read: from the language code used (ff) and the edit history, it's obvious that is exactly what was intended (we call it Fula). I tagged the translations with {{t-check}} just to be safe. Chuck Entz (talk) 13:57, 20 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
