Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as ter walslaghe in 1446. Derived from an inflected form of te (at) and a compound of an unclear first element and Dutch Low Saxon lage (low-lying area). The first element in Walslage may be a personal name. It is unlikely to be wal (levee, wall) or the hapax legomenon Middle Dutch *wals (foal).
