Welcome edit

Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
  • Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including, there is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
  • The FAQ aim to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! --Ivan Štambuk 07:53, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Word du jour/WOTD edit

Yes I had seen the Word du jour thing and know about WOTD; it hadn't quite crossed my mind to nominate my favorite words. (Of course p45 and the like wouldn't do as they're too infamous...) I guess it had never crossed my mind that people don't get notified or anything when their edits are undone/reverted and will try to talk to IPs in the future; however, some of them are just here to have fun and vandalize and warning them doesn't do any good. L☺g☺maniac chat? 22:58, 22 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

please don't block IP edit

Relax. ;) No one (well at least not me) is going to block them for something as trivial as that. It's just a sig after all not a satirical rant about someone or anything like that. 50 Xylophone Players talk 17:13, 23 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

That was there because just yesterday I saw an IP blocked for a bit because they were adding a couple of redundant words to a bunch of entries. I really think IPs are blocked far too often. --Yair rand 17:22, 23 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Meh... AGF is good and all, but it's a bit of a malformed idea if you ask me; note this: (from AGF page) ...It follows that the community assumes that most people who work on the project are trying to help it, not hurt it. [emphasis added] For example, I could be wrong but I think one time on Wikipedia I some AGF being taken to an idiotic level, that is some fool was vandalising something and an admin/user acted as though it could have something other than vandalism. >_> As I said though, I'm not sure. 50 Xylophone Players talk 18:13, 30 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nominate for adminship? edit

Hello there Yair rand. Would you like to be nominated for adminship? I would be willing to nominate you if you wish. Let me know. Cheers, Razorflame 04:32, 30 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sure, why not? I don't think I'll be using most of the tools though, I'm generally against most blocks and I don't like the idea of deleting pages without it being verified by someone else in case the first person made a mistake. Rollback could be very helpful in dealing with vandalism though. I can't see any reason not to, so go ahead. --Yair rand 04:41, 30 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
I don't think it would be a good idea then, if you wouldn't plan on using many of the tools that sysops are granted. I'll have to think on this for a while...Razorflame 04:47, 30 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

ricevanto edit

Would this word be better described as a Noun? —AugPi 04:18, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can't see why not. I've been labeling all the nominal participles as nouns so far. BTW, what is the {{eo-part-sublemma}} template for? --Yair rand 04:54, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
It is for Esperanto participles which end in -ta or -to, the forms which are in the top left corners of their 2x2 squares in the {{eo-conj}}. There is no link (in the inflection line) to the lemma form because this should be done in the definition line, using {{eo-form of}}. Template {{eo-part}} includes a link to the lemma, but this would be redundant if it is already done in the definition line. By "sublemma" I mean that it itself has inflected forms of its own, namely the ones which end in: -j, -n, and -jn. —AugPi 05:02, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
For example, for the Dutch word deur, 'deur' is the lemma and I call deurtje a "sublemma" since in its inflection line it has an inflected form, namely its plural deurtjes. Neither deuren nor deurtjes do I consider to be "sublemmas". —AugPi 05:06, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Cool. I think the Category:Esperanto participles should be removed though, because this is covered by {{eo-form of}}. If this is going to be used in all ta/to participles I'll go update the manĝi and brili forms and the {{new eo form}} template. --Yair rand 05:09, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Updated. --Yair rand 05:32, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jupiteron edit

Templates {{new eo form}} and {{eo-form of}} appear to not handle accusatives of proper nouns properly. Can you think of a way to fix this? An idea I just had is to use ending on-proper for param 2 instead of on; use ending on-properpl or on-proper-pl if the proper noun has plural, therefore needing to keep the "singular" in "accusative singular" in the definition line. What would the category be: Category:Esperanto proper noun forms (yes, the blue link answered my question)? —AugPi 07:35, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Done. --Yair rand 14:57, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ostr edit

Why did you remove the Eo meaning of ostr?

Because it was incorrect. All Esperanto nouns end in -o. You were probably thinking of ostro which I added at the same time as removing ostr. And please remember to sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~). --Yair rand 03:06, 9 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Compound words edit

Hi there. I've been trying to work on some of the compound words in Esperanto, but with my limited knowledge of the language, I am not getting very far. For example, which is the correct translation of solar wind: sunvento or suna vento? Thanks, Razorflame 22:58, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think they're both accepted terms, but the forms listed in suna vento are incorrect. --Yair rand 23:02, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I know they are. I just fixed them. Cheers, Razorflame 23:04, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Great. You might want to read the documentation of {{eo-noun}} for dealing with compound words. --Yair rand 23:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

shotgun marriage edit

Is this an appropriate use of a redirect? --Yair rand 05:40, 15 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is appropriate becuase it ADDS VALUE to the Wiktionary that was not there before. If you want to add value by doing something better with it, then, as the saying goes in Wiki, just do it.

But, deleting it would not be adding value, it would be withdrawing value. So make sure that what you do ADDS VALUE.--Richardb 05:58, 15 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I disagree, not with the adding value part, but with the choice of a redirect. This should be its own page. 70.112.24.181 06:34, 18 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bot feeding edit

Feel free to feed Darkicebot words here for addition :). Cheers, Razorflame 21:37, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I find it faster to do nouns and adjectives with wt:accel, it only takes about three or four seconds normally, and I figure that it doesn't make sense to add verbs before the bot flag is given. You're going to go through Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:eo-conj when the flag is given, right? --Yair rand 21:42, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nope. I'm going to go through the list of entries that I have in the text file that I've been building up since I perfected the bot. It is currently at 296KB of entries and growing. Razorflame 21:43, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Does that include all the uses of eo-conj, or will the rest have to be fed to the bot seperately? --Yair rand 21:46, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
It includes all the forms in the template. Razorflame 22:32, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, what I meant was does the text file include of all of the entries that use eo-conj? --Yair rand 22:35, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Not yet. It only includes entries that either I've written or added the conjugation tables to. I'm probably going to make lists of the entries that use {{eo-noun}}, {{eo-adj}}, and {{eo-conj}} once it gets approved. Razorflame 06:47, 17 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
All verbs that don't have the special j, s, or h with the hat that have {{eo-conj}} on them are now processed into my bot. Their forms will be made once it gets the bot flag. Feed the bot any verbs you add the conjugation template to if you want their forms made. Razorflame 07:05, 17 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proper nouns as countable? edit

edit

The Dutch wiktionary has no desire for yet another new logo.

It might help if even the anglophones would first recognize the validity of the earlier vote and adopt the tile logo that the international community had democratically decided upon and that many wiktionaries -including our- loyally adopted. The fact that anglophones think that they are above all that and can impose their own ideas is downright infuriating. That holds for this logo as it holds for the metric system or the Kyoto protocols.

The current proceedings have no democratic credibility.

Could you do that compound noun thing in {{eo-noun}} (as in {{eo-noun|sekreta|servo}}) for {{eo-noun}}? For proper nouns like itala lingvo. Ultimateria 22:18, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

That template looks like it's written completely differently than {{eo-noun}} so I don't know how to get that to work. I'll try to figure it out, and in the mean time, you can use what I used at itala lingvo, which has the same effect. --Yair rand 22:48, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'll just wait and only do that if changing the template doesn't work out. Clever idea though. : ) Ultimateria 22:53, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

The best I can think of is just using eo-noun without linking the headword. In Yellow Sea the headword isn't linked either. --Yair rand 04:06, 30 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, but Yair, I think this means that we need to re-tool the {{eo-proper noun}} now to allow multiple word PN's to be used like {{eo-noun}} uses them. I have no idea how to go about doing that. Razorflame 04:22, 30 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
See, the problem is that {{eo-proper noun}} was based off a different template, and already has specific meanings for the first and second perimeters (although I really don't see the point of them). The eo-noun template uses the first, second and third for multiple word nouns. --Yair rand 04:46, 30 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
And you have no way of making it possible?
Well, I suppose I could entirely redo the template, and then we could go through all of the approximately 210 uses of {{eo-proper noun}} and make sure that they work with the new version... --Yair rand 04:50, 30 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
210 isn't that bad :). We could split the work between me, you, and Ultimarea :) Razorflame 05:06, 30 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I redid the template. Now we need to look through the existing uses to see if anything jammed up. Basically, anything that used the first or second perimeters for anything other than "j" will have messed up. --Yair rand 05:32, 30 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
You go ahead and start without me...I got a few things I need to do first. Razorflame 05:35, 30 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Logo vote edit

Hi Yair rand, I did a tour of some Wiktionaries and I noticed that only a few have a link to meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiktionary/logo/refresh/voting on the MainPage. Should them be notified? See for exemple es: and de: Wiktionaries. I didn't find any links on the Wikipedias too. I think that involves all the wikicommunity, so why the news is not welcomed? The vote begin to look like a match Wiktionary against Wiktionnaire, and also the French translation appears to not be very neutral:

  • English version: Some users disliked the tiled logo, so they created the new vote.
  • French version: Les utilisateurs du Wiktionnaire anglophone n'aimant pas "ce logo avec tuiles", ils sont à l'origine de ce nouveau vote.
  • Translation: The users of the English Wiktionary disliked this tiled logo, they are at the origin of this new vote.

It seems all so strange to me :S Where we can discuss that? Pharamp 16:59, 4 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, honestly neither of them are correct. The vote was to unify the logos, and it was certainly not started entirely by English users. I think this should be discussed on m:Talk:Wiktionary/logo/refresh/voting. --Yair rand 19:03, 4 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Could you do that for me? With my name too if you prefer. I'm too shy and my level of English is too bad for posting on meta... Pharamp 19:41, 4 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Or the messages on the voting pages could just be edited directly. They were added by User:Thecurran who doesn't seem to have a full understanding of what led up to the vote. As for the other Wiktionaries that haven't been notified, as many of them should be notified as possible. The es and de Wiktionaries were notified of the second round in their discussion rooms, but it's their decision if they don't want to put up a sitenotice. --Yair rand 19:52, 4 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

{{eo-card form}} edit

Hey there Yair! I just made {{eo-card form}}. Basically, what is does is it automagically makes a cardinal number entry. The input that you use to make it work is: {{subst:eo-card form|<insert English translation of number here>}} For example, for the page okdek ok: {{subst:eo-card form|eighty-eight}} Hope you like it :) Cheers, Razorflame 02:33, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Interesting. Perhaps it could also include {{cardinalbox}}? --Yair rand 02:34, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Of course. What are the parameters needed for cardinalbox? Just the template? Cheers, Razorflame 02:35, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
No, it also needs the ISO code, the previous number, the following number, the ordinal form, and a bunch of other stuff. See Template talk:cardinalbox. It seems like it normally contains links to other number forms, but I'm not exactly sure what each of those are... --Yair rand 02:38, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think it might be better to just add them manually. It shouldn't take that long ;). Cheers, Razorflame 02:39, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Care to do the same thing to {{eo-ord form}} that you did to {{eo-card form}} (i.e. add in the ordinalbox template)? Cheers, Razorflame 03:16, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Done. Use like {subst:eo-ord form|11|dek|dek unu|dek du}}. The thing is, do we want to use the "1a, 2a..." format, or the "1-a, 2-a..." format? I think I've seen both used before... --Yair rand 03:27, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm...I don't really know which one is more popular, but either way is fine with me. Cheers, Razorflame 03:30, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, the Esperanto Wikipedia seems to use 1-a, etc. generally, so I guess we can use that. --Yair rand 03:31, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Trees in Esperanto edit

Hey there Yair. I'm in a little bit of a pickle. Both my single translation website and my offline English to Esperanto dictionary are saying that the Esperanto word for yew is taksuso. The only problem is that, based on breaking it down into English, it becomes a translation for the genus name. I'm torn about whether I should make the page say yew or the genus. What do you think? Razorflame 06:46, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't know. You could put both, I guess. --Yair rand 06:51, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Nope. After further exploring and researching, the tree name (not the scientific name), but the common name is what should go into there. Razorflame 13:36, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

What the hell are you doing? edit

Ƿidsiþ 06:11, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am moving all the pages in the WT: namespace to the Wiktionary: namespace. According to this, it is necessary for the namespace alias to take effect. --Yair rand 06:13, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Cool, while you are at it, can you delete the shortcuts on the topright of the pages you are moving to? (Such as {{shortcut|WT:CFI}}) JamesjiaoT C 07:10, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Why? All of those shortcuts will be fully functional again as soon as the namespace alias is put up. --Yair rand 07:13, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
The namespace alias is now working. --Yair rand 07:14, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok. My apologies. Either I didn't read the bug report correctly, or it's too vague for me to understand. Good job nevertheless. JamesjiaoT C 07:17, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

{{eo-ord form}} edit

Hi there Yair. I cannot remember how to use this template in entries. If you would be so kind as to tell me about it again? Thanks, Razorflame 13:35, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

king of beasts and bestio edit

Hi there Yair Rand. Can you please protect both bestio and king of beasts? An edit conflict has been spurred between me and an IP user, and I would like the page protected while we discuss it. Thanks, Razorflame 18:46, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re this edit

I never subst talk page templates, happy in the knowledge that should the message I intended to give be worded more clearly at a later date, the new wording will be available to those reviewing their talk pages. Subst'ed welcome templates in the past caused a lot of effort when we deprecated the WS: namespace (which is what we used before we had WT:) as I had to set a bot on to every talk page to fix the links instead of just the one template. Conrad.Irwin 18:38, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

The point was mainly for things like {{welcomeip}} which have to be substed, otherwise the wikisyntax shows up. --Yair rand 06:34, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ngarrindjeri templates edit

Thanks for your offer to create some Ngarrindjeri templates. As you can probably tell I'm a bit of a novice in Ngarrindjeri myself but I'll see what sort of template ideas I can come up with and get back to you. Cheers --Roisterer 12:12, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

{{io-verb}} edit

Hi there. I'm just a little confused by what your changes did to this template? Did your changes make it the same as eo-verb now? If it did, then that was what I was thinking. If not, thanks for telling me what they meant :). Thanks, Razorflame 04:30, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Assuming I did it right, it should now work the same as eo-verb now. --Yair rand 23:54, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

{{eo-noun-uncountable2}} edit

Hey there Yair. I made a new template that allows for one to use the eo-noun-unc template with multiple word entries, such as piruva acido. To use it, use {{eo-noun-unc2|<page title>|<first word>|<second word>}} :) Hope you like it :) Cheers, Razorflame 21:06, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why? eo-noun can also work with uncountable entries, just by using {{eo-noun|piruva|acido|-}}. --Yair rand 23:57, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I know...just figured that out like 15 minutes ago :o. My mistake. Please feel free to delete the template. Cheers, Razorflame 00:04, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

[4] edit

...למה? — [ R·I·C ] opiaterein20:46, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, there seem to be some Latin script entries in Category:Yiddish nouns, so apparently Yiddish is sometimes written in Latin script and they are accepted on Wiktionary, so they need to have the option for the correct script. --Yair rand 20:53, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
...almost all languages that don't normally use the latin script are sometimes written in it. So now we're just going to allow all of them to have latin-script entries? — [ R·I·C ] opiaterein21:40, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I hope not, but as long as they're there, there might as well be a script option. --Yair rand 21:46, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
You're supporting a bad precedent. — [ R·I·C ] opiaterein21:59, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Possibly. I notice that the Yiddish Wiktionary has half the main page in Latin script. If you want to RFD the Latin script entries, that might settle the issue. --Yair rand 23:07, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Aramaic index edit

Would I be correct in sorting this the same as Hebrew? Sorry I haven't gotten around to this for so long. Conrad.Irwin 18:23, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this should be sorted the same as Hebrew. Thanks. --Yair rand 02:12, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Calculation of the vote edit

Do you have a calculation of the vote Wiktionary:Votes/2010-02/ToC format? I understand that there was no consensus, but I do not know which option has won, which was the second one, etc. I also wonder how complex such a calculation really is. Thank you for any input. --Dan Polansky 09:19, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

No, I actually don't know which option won, or came in second, etc. I just checked whether any of the possibilities were rated over option 1 in more than two thirds of the votes, and none came close, so it wasn't necessary to check further. --Yair rand 02:14, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Template:WOTD edit

I'm confused as to the purpose of this edit. --EncycloPetey 22:28, 4 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's so the WOTD can be shown correctly on Wiktionary:Main Page/2009 redesign and Wiktionary:Main Page/Old 2007. It can be changed again when/if the redesign is put up. --Yair rand 22:31, 4 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Since the redesign is not yet approved, and potentially subject to more changes, surely it would be better to create a new temporary template than continually rewrite the current one. --EncycloPetey 22:35, 4 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
The point was so that the current word of the day could be displayed. Since {{Word of the day}} directly transcludes {{WOTD}}, I don't think that there is a way to have the current word of the day displayed in any different format elsewhere without changing {{WOTD}} itself. If there is a problem caused by this, then I guess the example WOTD could just be displayed instead, though. --Yair rand 22:39, 4 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Incubator edit

{{io-adj}} edit

Why did you remove the comparative and superlative forms from this template in this edit? Both were correct according to the inflection chart on the Ido Wiktionary, but I am curious to know your rationale behind deleting them. Thanks, Razorflame 19:56, 22 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

No point of keeping them, if Ido comparatives and superlatives are SoP. There's no useful links or information, so there's no reason to show the comparative or superlative. English, for example, sometimes has [X-er]/[X-est], so it makes sense to show comparative and superlative even when it is just "more X/most X", but Ido comparatives and superlatives never have anything useful. --Yair rand 20:07, 22 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
I see your point, but if the comparatives and superlatives are not linked, then why not just leave them in entries to show them to help people better understand the language? Razorflame 00:05, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Esperanto letters edit

Hello, Yair. I made a change on the parameters of Template:Latn-def, mainly to make compatibility with various types of Latin definitions easier. Then, I updated all the existing Esperanto letters and created the others, based on your lists of letters and letter names. So the entire alphabet of this language is covered in Wiktionary entries, with at least the three basic templates ({{eo-letter}}, {{Latn-def}} and {{list|eo|Latin script letters}}). --Daniel. 00:03, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

desysop edit

[1]. While of course I would vote in opposition and, frankly, the vote is ridiculous, I'm not sure that it should have been dismissed out of hand like that. I mean, the gripe he has against Ric, though not valid, would arguably be cause for desysoping if it were valid, so a vote could be in order. Yes, I know, he requested desysoping on meta already, only to be dismissed. But that was a wrong way to request a desysop, whereas his way now was the right way. I'm not saying I'll restore the page, nor even that you should: I'm just filing my difference of opinion with deleting it FWIW.—msh210 15:10, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I 90% agree. (The other 10% calls your attention to one of the "tentative guidelines" at Wiktionary:Votes — the one that says, "Votes should not be called for on this page. They should be the result of prior discussion located elsewhere (the Beer Parlor)." Which would get even more than 10% of me, but for the fact that we usually enforce that guideline by voting "oppose" rather than by unilaterally deleting the vote page!) —RuakhTALK 18:06, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't speak American Sign Language edit

Probably nitpicking - but nobody actually "speaks" a sign language, do they? SemperBlotto 21:53, 3 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't think so. This should probably be renamed something else, but I'm not sure what. (Note that I didn't create this entry; it was started by IP 84.21.8.78.) --Yair rand 22:00, 3 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
According to the current fifth definition of speak "(transitive) To be able to communicate in a language.", people do speak American Sign Language. Nonetheless, perhaps I don't know American Sign Language is the better choice, because it is more common and intuitive. --Daniel. 10:36, 4 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sign works as a counterpart to speak.—msh210 15:22, 4 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Are you sure? I thought "sign" was only intransitive. Google gets 0 hits for "I don't sign American Sign Language". --Yair rand 16:57, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
