From Old Galician-Portuguese aguillon (“sting”) + -ada (“-ing, -er: forming nouns related to striking”), attested in the 13th century Cantigas de Santa Maria, from aculeus (“sting”). Doublet of aguilhão. Cognate with Galician aguillada.
