Etymology

From a Vulgar Latin root *allongāre, from Latin longe. Other theories suggest it deriving straight from Latin elongare. Compare Italian allungare, Catalan allunyar (move away, remove, distance onself), French éloigner, allonger, Galician alongar (move away), Spanish alongar and Portuguese alongar.
