editFrom Proto-Vietic *poːnʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *punʔ ~ *puən() ~ *pan(); cognate with Muong pổn, Khmer បួន (buən), Bahnar puăn, Pacoh poan, Mang puːn², Mon ပန်, Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] fōan, Santali ᱯᱳᱱ/ᱯᱩᱱ (pon/pun).
