editUncertain. Possibly from Latin boreās (“northern wind”) (compare Italian borea, Dalmatian and Venetian bura, also Catalan boira and Albanian borë) or alternatively Slavic (Proto-Slavic *buřa; compare Serbo-Croatian bura, Bulgarian буря (burja), Macedonian бура (bura)).[1]
