Compound of burung (bird) +‎ unta (camel), from Malay burung unta. Compare with Hindi शुतुरमुर्ग़ (śuturmurġ, ostrich, literally camel fowl), Persian شترمرغ (ostrich, literally camel fowl), Turkish deve kuşu (ostrich, literally camel bird).
