Inherited from Proto-Muskogean *čokxʷiCi (“rabbit”). The sense of “sheep” only came later after they were introduced by the Europeans colonizers. Cognate with Choctaw chukfi, Alabama chokfi, Creek cufe.

If one wants to distinguish between the sense of “rabbit” and “sheep”, one can use chokfalhpoobaꞌ (“sheep”) (which uses the specifier alhpoobaꞌ (“domesticated”)).
