Etymology 1

Uncertain. Takacs (1999) compares it to Proto-Kuliak *dọb (“rhinoceros”). Possibly related to db (“horn, tusk”); compare the possible relation between ḫꜣb (“hippopotamus”) and ḫꜣb (“to be bent”) (in reference to the animal’s tusks).
