Ultimately from Ancient Greek φιλόσοφος (philósophos, literally “lover of wisdom”).
- From Arabic فَيْلَسُوف (faylasūf, “philosopher”)
- From earlier filosof, from Dutch filosoof, from Middle Dutch filosofe, possibly via Old French philosophe, from Latin philosophus
