From Proto-Germanic *gasatjaną, equivalent to ġe- +‎ settan. Cognate with Old Saxon gisettian, Old High German gisezzen, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍃𐌰𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gasatjan).
