Etymology

Inherited from Malay kawasan, from Classical Malay kawasan (“area”), from Javanese ꦏꦮꦱꦤ꧀ (kawasan, “authorised area”), from Old Javanese kawaśan (“dominion”), from Sanskrit वश (vaśa, “authority, power, control, dominion”). Equivalent to kuasa +‎ -an.

1. (geography) region: Any considerable and connected part of a space or surface; specifically, a tract of land or sea of considerable but indefinite extent; a country; a district; in a broad sense, a place without special reference to location or extent but viewed as an entity for geographical, social or cultural reasons.

   Synonyms: daerah, wilayah, rantau (Standard Malay)

2. area, zone: a given area distinguished on the basis of a particular characteristic, use, restriction, etc.
