Etymology

edit

Cognate with Latvian logs, Old Prussian lanxto; further origin outside of Baltic unclear. Buck and Fraenkel suggest a derivation from lingúoti (to rock), referring originally to swinging windows (that is, windows whose panes swing in and out to open)[1][2] while Smoczynski suggests a derivation from lañkas (bow), owing to the semicircular shape of a bow resembling that of many windows.[3] Either way, both derivations likely lead to a root from the same family as Proto-Balto-Slavic *lénktei (to bend, twine).
