Compound of mata (eye) +‎ pelajaran (lesson), from Malay mata pelajaran (a particular area of study), likely a calque of Chinese 科目 (“subject (in a curriculum, or at a school); course”), from (branch (of study)) +‎ (, eye). Similar to Indonesian mata kuliah.
