editFrom Proto-Polynesian *motu (compare with Maori motu) from Proto-Oceanic *motus (“broken off, detached”), possibly from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ma-utus (compare with Malay putus (“to snap, to break”)).[1] Sense of large ships extension from sense of island because of their gigantic size compared to the typical waʻa.[2]
